Tai Chi

Tai Chi translates as “grand ultimate,” and is called so because it is a martial arts style that does not use external force, but rather summons the ultimate power that lies within.  Tai Chi uses breathing techniques coordinated with martial movement, which is done in a slow, poetic choreography.  The practice and study of Tai Chi teaches one how to move and flow with universal forces.  Tai Chi is extraordinarily graceful, yet mysteriously powerful.  The advanced Tai Chi practitioner ultimately achieves a higher state of mind and acute awareness of the subtle energies that exist both inside and outside of the body.

There are a multitude of health benefits associated with Tai Chi practice, as the art is well known to enhance longevity.  In general, tai chi has been reported to help lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and reduce falls among seniors.  It has also been known to enhance athletic performance.  It is a healing practice in every way, but it is also a fighting art, as each movement has a martial application.  Unlike “external” martial arts, the “internal” art of tai chi teaches one how to overcome the opponent with softness.  There is a Taoist saying, “The soft overcomes the hard, and the weak overcomes the strong.” this is Tai Chi.  In our opinion, the highest application of tai chi is learning how to live in presence and flow, navigating around the obstacles of life with grace and ease.
